Loving Others Like Christ
One of the greatest marks of a genuine follower of Jesus Christ is love. The world often defines love as a feeling, but Scripture reveals that biblical love is a choice demonstrated through action. Jesus didn’t simply tell us to love He showed us what love looks like through His life, His ministry, and ultimately His sacrifice on the cross.
“A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” — John 13:34
Christ Is Our Example
Jesus loved people who were easy to love, but He also loved those who rejected Him. He showed compassion to the hurting, patience toward the weak, mercy to sinners, and grace to those who failed Him. Even while hanging on the cross, He prayed for those who crucified Him. The standard Jesus gives isn’t simply to love others as they love us. He commands us to love others as He has loved us. That kind of love is sacrificial, forgiving, and unconditional.
What Does Christlike Love Look Like?
- It Serves Others
Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, performing the task of the lowest servant. He taught that greatness is found in serving, not being served.
Ask yourself:
- Who can I serve today?
- How can I put someone else’s needs before my own?
- It Forgives Freely
Every believer has experienced God’s incredible forgiveness. Because we have been forgiven much, we are called to forgive others.
Forgiveness doesn’t excuse wrong actions, but it releases bitterness and reflects the mercy God has shown us.
- It Speaks Truth with Grace
Loving someone doesn’t mean ignoring sin or avoiding difficult conversations. Jesus always spoke truth, but He did so with compassion and wisdom. Christlike love refuses to compromise truth while refusing to abandon kindness.
- It Sees People as God Sees Them
It’s easy to judge people by their past, appearance, or failures. Jesus saw beyond the surface. He saw souls that desperately needed hope.
Every person you meet today is someone Christ loves and someone He died to save.
Why This Matters
Jesus made a remarkable statement:
“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” — John 13:35 (KJV)
Our love is one of the greatest testimonies of the Gospel. Churches can have excellent programs, powerful preaching, and beautiful buildings, but without genuine love, our witness loses credibility.
People may forget our words, but they rarely forget how we treated them.
A Challenge for Today
Before the day ends, ask God to help you intentionally show Christ’s love to someone.
- Encourage someone who is discouraged.
- Forgive someone who has hurt you.
- Pray for someone who is difficult to love.
- Look for an opportunity to serve without expecting recognition.
- Share the Gospel with someone who needs the hope of Christ.
The love of Christ transformed us. Now He calls us to be instruments of that same love in the lives of others.
May our homes, our churches, and our communities see Jesus through the way we love.
