How to Pray When Life Feels Overwhelming

Life has a way of piling things on all at once. Responsibilities, stress, family needs, financial pressure, health concerns, and spiritual battles can leave us feeling completely overwhelmed. In those moments, prayer can be difficult. Sometimes we
don’t even know what to say. The good news is that God understands those moments. Prayer doesn’t require perfect words—it simply requires a heart that turns to Him. Here are a few reminders that can help guide us when life feels overwhelming.

1. Start by Bringing Your Burdens to God
When life feels heavy, the first step is simply bringing your burdens to the Lord. You don’t have to carry them alone. Psalm 55:22 “Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.” God invites us to give Him our worries, fears, and stress. Prayer becomes the place where we release what we cannot control and trust the One who can. Sometimes that prayer may be as simple as: “Lord, I don’t know what to do right now, but I need Your help.” God hears that prayer.

2. Be Honest with God
The Bible shows us that many faithful believers poured out their honest emotions to God. David often prayed from a place of distress, confusion, and even fear. Psalm 61:2“From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.” God already knows what we are feeling. Prayer allows us to bring those feelings to Him openly. When our hearts are overwhelmed, we cry out to the One who is greater than our circumstances.

3. Let Scripture Guide Your Prayer
When words fail us, Scripture can help shape our prayers. Many believers find comfort praying God’s Word back to Him. For example, you might pray: “Lord, you said in Philippians 4 that I should bring everything to You with prayer and
supplication. I’m bringing this situation to You right now and asking for Your peace.” Philippians 4:6–7 “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

4. Remember That God Cares for You
When life feels overwhelming, we can begin to feel alone. But the Bible reminds us that God deeply cares about every burden we carry. 1 Peter 5:7 “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.” Prayer is not about convincing God to care—He already does. Prayer is about bringing our cares to the One who loves us most. When life feels too heavy to carry, remember: you were never meant to carry it alone. As Baptist preacher Charles Spurgeon once said, “Anxiety does not empty tomorrow of its sorrows, but only empties today of its strength.”

The answer to overwhelming seasons is not carrying more weight ourselves—but bringing those burdens to the Lord in prayer.
