Why Does God Allow Suffering?

One of the hardest questions people ask is, “If God loves us, why does He allow suffering?” Whether we experience the loss of a loved one, sickness, financial struggles, or personal heartache, suffering can leave us searching for answers. The Bible does not ignore the reality of suffering. Instead, it reminds us that even in our darkest moments, God is still present, He still cares, and we can still trust Him.
We Live in a Sin-Cursed World
When God created the world, His creation was good. But when sin entered the world through Adam, suffering, sickness, and death became part of the human experience.
Romans 5:12 explains how sin entered the world and death followed because of sin. The suffering we see around us is a reminder that this world is not as God originally intended it to be. Not every hardship is the result of a person’s individual sin. Sometimes people suffer simply because we live in a fallen world. We should be careful not to assume that someone’s suffering is God’s punishment for a particular wrongdoing.
Romans 5:12
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”
God Can Use Suffering to Grow Our Faith
Although God does not promise that we will never experience hardship, the Bible teaches that He can use difficult circumstances to strengthen our faith. James 1:2–3 teaches that the trying of our faith worketh patience. Trials can teach us to depend more fully on God, develop endurance, and recognize our need for His wisdom and strength.
This does not mean we should pretend that suffering feels good or that we should never grieve. It means that even when we cannot understand what God is doing, we can trust Him to work in our lives through difficult seasons.
James 1:2–3
“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.”
God Is Present in Our Suffering
One of the greatest comforts in Scripture is the reminder that we do not have to face suffering alone. Psalm 34:18 says, “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” God does not promise that we will always understand our circumstances, but He assures us of His presence. We can bring our fears, questions, and sorrow to Him in prayer. Sometimes God changes our circumstances. Other times, He gives us the grace and strength to endure them. Either way, His presence is a comfort we can depend on.
Jesus Understands Our Pain
The Christian faith does not present a distant God who is unfamiliar with suffering. Jesus Christ came into this world and experienced rejection, sorrow, physical pain, and death.
Isaiah 53:3 describes Him as “a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief.” Jesus understands the pain of this broken world. Through His death and resurrection, He also provides the hope of forgiveness and eternal life. For those who trust Him, suffering and death do not have the final word.
Suffering Will Not Last Forever
The Bible points us beyond the troubles of this present world to the promise of eternity with God. Revelation 21:4 gives this wonderful promise: “And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.” We may not receive an answer to every question about suffering during our lifetime. Some losses may remain difficult to understand. But God has promised a future in which sorrow, death, and pain will be no more.
Where Can We Turn When We Suffer?
When suffering comes, it is natural to ask God why. We can honestly bring those questions to Him while continuing to seek His Word, pray, and lean on the support of other believers.
We may not always understand why God allows certain things to happen, but we can know His character. He is faithful, He is merciful, and He has demonstrated His love through Jesus Christ. If you are going through a difficult season, remember that you do not have to carry your burden alone. Turn to God in prayer, find encouragement in His Word, and reach out to others who can pray with you and support you.
