How to Forgive When It’s Hard

Forgiveness is one of the most difficult commands in Scripture. It’s easy to forgive small offenses, but deep wounds can leave scars that last for years. Whether you’ve been betrayed, lied to, rejected, or deeply hurt, choosing to forgive can feel impossible.
The good news is this: God never asks us to do something without giving us the grace to obey.
“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” — Ephesians 4:32
Remember How Much You’ve Been Forgiven
The foundation of our forgiveness isn’t the person who hurt us it is the Savior who forgave us. Every sin we’ve committed against God was infinitely greater than anything another person has done against us. Yet Christ willingly bore our punishment on the cross and offered us complete forgiveness. When we remember the mercy we’ve received, it becomes easier to extend mercy to others.
Forgiveness Is a Choice, Not a Feeling
Many people wait until they feel like forgiving. The Bible teaches the opposite.
Forgiveness begins with a decision to obey God, even when emotions haven’t caught up yet. Feelings often follow faithful obedience. You may have to choose forgiveness more than once as painful memories return, but every time you surrender those hurts to the Lord, He continues His work of healing your heart.
Pray for the One Who Hurt You
Jesus gave one of the hardest commands in all of Scripture:
“Love your enemies… pray for them which despitefully use you.” — Matthew 5:44
Prayer changes our perspective. It softens bitterness and reminds us that every person needs God’s grace including us. You may not be able to change the other person’s heart, but God can certainly change yours.
Trust God With the Outcome
Some relationships are beautifully restored after forgiveness. Others are not.
Forgiveness is your responsibility. Reconciliation requires repentance, humility, and rebuilding trust from both people. Whether reconciliation happens or not, refusing to carry bitterness will free your heart to experience God’s peace.
A Challenge for Today
Is there someone you’ve struggled to forgive?
Take that name before the Lord today.
Ask Him for the strength to release the hurt into His hands. You may not feel different immediately, but every step of obedience opens the door for God to bring healing.
