How to Overcome Addiction with God

Addiction is one of the most difficult battles a person can face. Whether it’s substances, habits, or hidden struggles, addiction has a way of taking control, creating shame, and making freedom feel impossible.
But here’s the truth: through God, freedom is possible.
1. Admit the Struggle Honestly
Freedom begins with honesty. Addiction thrives in secrecy and denial. As long as we pretend everything is fine, nothing will change. But when we come to God truthfully—without excuses or masks—that’s when healing can begin.
“He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13, KJV)
God already knows your struggle. He’s not waiting for you to impress Him—He’s waiting for you to come to Him.
2. Understand That You Need God’s Strength
Addiction is stronger than willpower alone. You can try harder, set boundaries, and make promises—but lasting victory doesn’t come from self-effort. It comes from surrender.
“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4:13, KJV)
If We are going to obtain freedom from our sin, we must need the strength and power of God!
3. Replace, Don’t Just Remove
One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to simply remove the addiction without replacing it. But emptiness creates vulnerability.
Instead, replace harmful habits with godly ones:
Time in Scripture
Prayer
Healthy routines
Serving others
God doesn’t just want to take something out of your life—He wants to put something better in its place.
4. Remove Triggers and Temptations
This is where real, practical obedience comes in. If something consistently leads you into sin, it needs to go—no matter how small it seems.
“Make not provision for the flesh…” (Romans 13:14, KJV)
That might mean:
Changing environments
Cutting off certain influences
Setting boundaries with your time or technology
This isn’t weakness—it’s wisdom.
5. Don’t Fight Alone
Isolation fuels addiction. Community helps break it. You need people in your life who:
Know your struggle
Will pray for you
Will hold you accountable
“Bear ye one another’s burdens…” (Galatians 6:2, KJV)
God often uses people as part of the healing process. Don’t try to win this battle by yourself.
