Why Sunday School Matters for Children

Children are growing up in a world filled with voices competing for their attention. From school and friends to entertainment and social media, they are constantly learning what to value, what to believe, and how to view the world. That is one reason Sunday School matters so much. It gives children a regular opportunity to learn the timeless truths of God’s Word in a way they can understand.
Building a Biblical Foundation
Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Sunday School helps build that foundation by teaching children the stories, principles, and truths of the Bible. They learn about creation, sin, salvation, faith, obedience, prayer, and the love of God. These lessons are truths that can shape the way a child thinks and lives.
Learning That the Bible Applies to Them
Children need to know that the Bible is not only a book for adults. God’s Word speaks to them too. Through Sunday School, children can learn what the Bible says about telling the truth, obeying their parents, treating others with kindness, making wise choices, trusting God when they are afraid, and knowing Jesus Christ personally. Psalm 119:105 says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” We want children to learn early that God’s Word can guide them throughout their lives.
Building Godly Relationships
Sunday School also gives children an opportunity to develop friendships with other children who are learning about God. They are surrounded by teachers and church members who care about them, pray for them, encourage them, and want to see them grow in their faith. A faithful Sunday School teacher can become another godly influence reinforcing the biblical truths parents are teaching at home.
Developing a Habit of Church Attendance
Habits formed during childhood can have a lasting impact. When families make Sunday School and church a priority, children learn that worshiping God, studying His Word, and gathering with other believers are important parts of life. Sunday School should never replace parents teaching their children about God at home, but it can be a wonderful partner to the Christian home.
Your Child Is Welcome
Whether your family has attended church for years, has recently moved into the community, or has never been involved in church before, Sunday School is a great place for your child to begin.
At Lighthouse Baptist Church, we want children to know that they are loved, that God created them for a purpose, and most importantly, that they can know Jesus Christ as their Savior.
We would love to have your family join us this Sunday and discover how Sunday School can help your child build a foundation of faith that can last a lifetime.
